Black Galaxy Granite
Black Galaxy is one of the most-specified granites in Kerala, a deep black base with golden mica flecks, quarried from Ongole in Andhra Pradesh. The reference South Indian granite for kitchen counters, lobby flooring and elevation cladding.
Material notes, Black Galaxy Granite
Black Galaxy is the granite that most Kochi kitchen clients have on their initial shortlist whether they know its name yet or not. It is a coarse-grained granite quarried from the Ongole region of Andhra Pradesh, with a defining visual that nothing else replicates, a deep black base shot through with golden biotite-mica flecks that catch light at every angle.
We work directly with the source quarry and hold Black Galaxy in 18mm, 20mm and 30mm thicknesses at our Kundannoor godown. Random slabs are typically 9’×5’ to 10’×5’.
Why Black Galaxy keeps getting specified
- Kitchen-counter performance, low water absorption, high breaking strength, heat-tolerant, hides daily marks against the dark base.
- The gold mica, no other commercial granite gives the same sparkle pattern. The biotite is embedded throughout, not surface-applied.
- UV stable, holds colour through decades of Kerala sun and monsoon.
- Works at any scale, from a single 30 sqft kitchen counter to a 5 000 sqft lobby floor with consistent visual.
- Takes any finish well, polished gives drama, leather hides fingerprints, flamed gives anti-slip exterior grip.
Where it suits
- Kitchen countertops, the default-correct Kerala spec.
- Drawing-room and lobby flooring, especially in larger format slabs.
- Staircase treads and risers, with anti-slip nosing on external steps.
- Elevation cladding, façade work, especially against light-coloured render or laterite.
- Bathroom vanity tops.
- Commercial reception desks and bar fronts.

Common questions on Black Galaxy Granite
Why is Black Galaxy so popular for Kerala kitchen counters? +
Three reasons. Visually, the dark base with gold mica is striking and hides daily marks. Practically, it has very low water absorption and high breaking strength, so it handles hot pans, citrus and abrasion well. Commercially, it's quarry-direct from Andhra Pradesh and stays competitively priced for what is functionally a premium material.
Is the gold mica painted on? +
No. Black Galaxy's gold flecks are biotite mica crystals embedded throughout the stone, formed naturally during the rock's crystallisation. They are part of the stone body, not a surface finish, which means they cannot wear off or scratch out.
What's the difference between Black Galaxy and Star Galaxy? +
Marketing terms used interchangeably by many traders, but technically Star Galaxy refers to a variant with denser, more uniform mica distribution. Black Galaxy can have larger but more sparsely-spread flecks. We stock both, and the right choice depends on whether you want even sparkle or larger statement flecks.
Is Black Galaxy suitable for outdoor use? +
Yes, in flamed finish. Black Galaxy holds up extremely well in monsoon, UV and humidity. We've supplied Black Galaxy elevation cladding for buildings on Marine Drive that have been in place fifteen-plus years without colour shift. For external paving, specify the flamed finish for slip resistance.
