Material Notes, Carrara Vein GVT Vitrified

Carrara Vein is the printed-marble pattern that dominates new-construction floor specs in Kerala right now. It’s a glazed vitrified tile from Morbi (Gujarat), a porcelain body with a digital print of the classic Carrara Bianco veining transferred onto its surface during glazing.

We stock five sizes from 600×600 up to 1200×1800. The 800×1600 high-gloss is the bestseller for residential drawing-room and bedroom flooring; the matte 800×1600 is the bestseller for high-end commercial.

For 90% of new-build residential, the GVT is the right call. For statement bathrooms, hotel lobbies and architect-led homes where the marble is the spec, real marble still wins.

Sizes and what they’re for

  • 600×600, small bathrooms, kitchen, utility. Forgiving on uneven substrate.
  • 600×1200, common bedroom/drawing room spec, accommodates standard wall lengths.
  • 800×800, high-end residential, square format.
  • 800×1600, the workhorse spec for premium residential.
  • 1200×1800, large-format showcase pieces; requires substrate within ±3mm/m.

Installation requirements

Large-format GVT (anything 800×1600 and above) needs a substrate that is genuinely flat. We bring a 2 m straightedge to site visits and check before quoting so installation goes cleanly. If the substrate falls outside tolerance, levelling is added as a clear line-item on the quote and discussed with you before any work starts.

Other installation specifications:

  • C2TE adhesive (notched trowel, 8-10mm bed), not cement mortar.
  • Back-buttering of each tile for >70% adhesive coverage.
  • 2-3mm joint spacing with spacers (we recommend rectified-edge tiles for narrow joints).
  • Diamond wet-saw cutting on site; no hand-tile-cutter for this format.

These specifications drift if labour isn’t familiar with large-format. Our crews do this weekly, local labour borrowed for one site often doesn’t.

Designer matching

Carrara Vein pairs cleanly with:

  • Tan Brown granite for kitchen counters.
  • Burma Teak engineered wood for bedroom or staircase contrast.
  • Black galaxy granite for door thresholds and skirting.
  • Carrara White marble for foyer / entrance accent inlay.

We hold all of these in the godown, ask the floor-staff to lay sample pieces alongside each other before you commit.

Common questions on Carrara Vein Vitrified Tile

Why specify GVT instead of natural Carrara marble? +

Cost (~1/4 the price), uniformity (every tile prints identically, natural marble varies slab to slab), zero sealing maintenance, and far better stain resistance. The trade-off is depth of pattern: real marble has translucence GVT can't quite match.

What's the difference between GVT, PGVT and DGVT? +

GVT (Glazed Vitrified) has a printed surface design over a porcelain body. PGVT (Polished GVT) adds a glossy polish post-firing. DGVT (Double Charge) presses pigments into the body for through-pattern wear resistance, much more expensive, used in commercial high-traffic.

How is a 800×1600 tile installed? +

Large-format requires a perfectly level substrate (max 3mm/m deviation), notched-trowel adhesive (not cement mortar), and back-buttering. Our installation teams handle these, most local labour does not have the experience. Specify with installation if the substrate is uncertain.
