Material Notes, Heavy-Duty Parking Pavers

Concrete interlocking pavers are the right specification for any outdoor surface that has to handle vehicles. They flex with the substrate, can be lifted and re-laid if you need to access a utility line, and they cost half what a granite or natural-stone paving cost would.

We supply three vehicular grades, 60mm, 80mm and 100mm, and four common shape profiles. The 80mm in zig-zag profile is the dominant residential driveway spec; 100mm in I-shape is the workhorse for commercial yards and apartment-block parking.

For your residential driveway: 80mm in any of the profiles will work. For your shopping-mall parking floor: 100mm with a proper RCC base. Anyone selling you 60mm for vehicular use is undercutting the spec.

Shape profiles in stock

  • Zig-zag, the most interlocking pattern, distributes load well across multiple pavers. Default choice for vehicular.
  • I-shape, looks like an “I” in plan. Strong interlock, popular for commercial.
  • Rectangular, straight 200×100 rectangle. Easier to lay, easier to cut at edges, slightly less interlock.
  • Hexagonal, six-sided. Decorative, slower to lay, edge-cutting more wasteful. Specify only when the visual matters.

Colour and finish

Available colours:

  • Natural grey, cheapest, always in stock, fastest to lay.
  • Red, the iconic “Kerala parking” red. Looks well against laterite walls.
  • Yellow, used for visibility marking lanes within a yard.
  • Black, premium look, holds heat in Kerala sun, specify only where shaded.

Finishes:

  • Plain, smooth top surface, factory-default.
  • Surface-textured, light embossed pattern for visual interest.
  • Shot-blasted, coarse anti-slip finish, recommended around pools and steep gradients.

Base preparation, where most paver jobs go wrong

The paver is only as good as the base it sits on. Standard scope for our installation:

  1. Excavation to depth of 250-300mm below finished level.
  2. Subgrade compaction with roller, minimum 95% Proctor density.
  3. Granular sub-base (GSB or WMM) 150-200mm thick, watered and compacted in 100mm lifts.
  4. Geotextile separator between sub-base and bedding sand (optional but recommended in clay soils).
  5. Bedding sand 50mm, sharp sand, not soft sand, not river sand.
  6. Paver laying by hand, starting from a fixed edge restraint.
  7. Mechanical plate-compaction of laid pavers.
  8. Joint sand sweeping, fine kiln-dried sand brushed into 2-3mm joints, then plate-compacted again.

Skipping any of these steps shows up as subsidence within 6-18 months. We do all of them. Our installation rate includes them.

Project pricing bands

Pricing is banded by project size and scope, material-only (you handle the base), material + standard install (over an existing base), or material + full base prep + install (excavation, GSB sub-base, bedding sand, paver laying, compaction). Larger projects unlock meaningful discount.

Common questions on Heavy-Duty Parking Paver

Which paver thickness should I specify for car parking? +

For private car parking on properly compacted base, 60mm is adequate. For 24/7 commercial parking or anywhere with vans/trucks, specify 80mm. For loading bays, lorry yards or any heavy vehicle access, 100mm with proper base prep.

What's underneath the pavers? +

Standard build-up: 150-200mm well-compacted granular sub-base (GSB or WMM), 50mm bedding sand (sharp, not soft), then pavers, then jointing sand swept into 2-3mm joints. The sub-base layer is what prevents paver subsidence years down the line, so we always quote it as a proper line-item rather than shortcutting it.

Can pavers be installed near saltwater or pool deck? +

Yes. Concrete pavers tolerate Kerala's coastal humidity well, better than most natural stones. For pool decks specify shot-blasted finish for slip resistance and avoid the very pale colours which show salt staining.
