Material Notes, Large-Format Porcelain Slabs

Large-format porcelain is the material that has reshaped premium residential and commercial specification in Kerala over the past five years. It is a sintered porcelain, silica-quartz raw material pressed and fired at >1 200°C, making it the hardest, densest and most stable ceramic surface available for architectural use.

We supply three tiers, priced by sourcing origin:

  • Morbi premium (Indian), most cost-effective entry to large-format. Good for residential.
  • Spanish premium, sharper print quality, deeper colour accuracy on marble-look prints.
  • Italian top-tier, the reference standard. Specifier choice for high-end residential, hotels, hospitality.

Where large-format wins

ApplicationWhy it wins
Entry lobby floorsNear-seamless surface; one or two slabs cover most lobbies
Drawing-room flooringUp to 8’×4’ tiles read as continuous floor
Kitchen counter + backsplashSame slab from counter to wall, no break, no joint
Bathroom walls + floorContinuous wall-to-floor cladding, full-height single slab
Façade rain-screenUV stable, frost-free, very low absorption
Commercial receptionPEI V abrasion class; survives wheel-load and chair-roll

Sizes and what they’re for

  • 800×1600, most common; works as flooring tile with normal substrate.
  • 1200×1800, high-end residential floor; needs flat substrate.
  • 1200×2400, feature applications; wall full-height, counter full-slab.
  • 1600×3200, specifier territory. Featured installations only. Bespoke handling required.

Substrate and installation requirements

Large-format demands more from installation than any other material we sell.

Substrate flatness, within ±3mm per running metre. We bring a 2m straightedge and laser level to site visits and check before quoting. If your substrate falls outside tolerance, we level it first as a line-item.

Adhesive specification, C2TE-class with extended open time. Standard cementitious adhesives will not bond reliably to slabs this large.

Coverage, minimum 95% adhesive coverage with back-buttering. Voids under large-format are catastrophic and irreparable without removing the slab.

Joint width, 2-3mm typical with epoxy grouting. Rectified-edge slabs allow 1.5mm joints for near-seamless effect.

Handling, two-installer minimum with frame jigs and suction-cup lifters. The slab is fragile in handling, durable in place.

We will not quote large-format installation without doing a site visit first. The conversation is “is your substrate ready” before it is “what does it cost.”

Sample programme

For specifier-led projects we run a sample programme:

  1. A4-size physical samples shipped within Kerala, free.
  2. Single full-slab dispatch to design office, at material cost, refundable against order.
  3. Live mock-up at the godown, design teams can lay 4-6 slabs on the floor to evaluate at scale before commit.

Architects and PMC firms specifying for projects over 5 000 sqft should contact us at sample-programme stage. We will allocate a project specialist for the duration of specification through handover.

Common questions on Large-Format Porcelain Slab

Why specify large-format porcelain over GVT or marble? +

Large-format gives almost-seamless installation, a 600 sqft floor can be laid with 60 slabs at 1200×2400, against 1 600 tiles at 600×600. Visually closer to one continuous surface. Compared to marble: same look at 1/3 the cost, no etching, no sealing, no maintenance.

Can porcelain be used as a kitchen counter? +

Yes, and it's increasingly the specifier's choice. 12mm or 20mm porcelain in 1200×3000 size makes a single-slab counter with no joints. Heat-resistant, stain-resistant, zero sealing required. Cost is comparable to premium quartz.

What's the installation challenge with large-format? +

Substrate flatness within ±3mm/m, two-installer minimum with frame jigs, specialised C2TE adhesive with extended open time, suction-cup handling. Standard tile-layers cannot do this safely. We send our specialised crew for 1200×2400 and above.
